Sorry this is long...(you can skip the history)

A little history…I developed severe pre-e and HELLP at 28 weeks with my first daughter and was admitted thru the ER and remained in the hospital until I delivered at 31 weeks. In retrospect I started having symptoms at 25 weeks, but was blown-off by my original OB. My first symptoms were vomiting, headaches, epigastric pain, finally at my 26 week appointment with her, she told me to go on a diet because I had gained 7 pounds in a month, I changed OB’s immediately and met with their nurse practicioner 3 days before I ended up in ER (at that my appointment my bp was normal).

That Sunday I woke up with chest pains and went to ER, where I was told I was having an anxiety attack and given Vicoden (my bp was fine at this visit). The next day I was doing even worse, vomiting everywhere and it felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest. My mom took me to the ER of the hospital that my new OB’s practiced out of, my bp was 140/100 and they asked if I had high blood pressure normally – I don’t. They found a blood clot in my arm and protein in my urine was at 767. They admitted me to ICU until an OB could review my chart. I was transferred to L&D and lasted 20 days on and off of mag, until I had my daughter at 31 weeks.

I am now pregnant with a little boy and have just made it past 31 weeks (this past Sunday). I have been monitored very closely and am on Lovenox shots for Factor II (which they found out I had last time).

However, this past weekend I have started to present with some of my “a-typical” symptoms, epigastric pain, headache and I was vomiting Sunday. Yesterday, after getting another headache, I called my OB, just to let them know what was going on and told them that last time the last thing that happened was my bp went up. They had me come in to be monitored for a couple of hours because my last urine sample was 2+ for protein and my last 24 hour urine was 253. I was hoping my labs would give an indication that I wasn’t overreacting, but they all came back okay and baby looks good, so I was released last night and given another 24 hour urine to do. My bp’s were great, but I have had spikey ones(but again, in my case that seems to be the last thing that goes). I don’t feel well, just generally tired and what seems like a constant headache (but maybe bc I’m so tired).

I can’t tell if I am just really scared or if this is all happening again, but my OB’s don’t seem to be concerned. I see them again next Tuesday and then start seeing them twice/week.

I am still working, but just trying to take it easy when I am home.

It would not hurt to call in or take a trip to L&D...what is your BP?

Shana, how are your symptoms today? Labile pressures like that can be a significant warning signal; I wouldn't hesitate to head right back in with any worsening or novel symptoms.

Science is getting us closer to finding a cause, and even a cure. The articles you don't want to miss:
The Preeclampsia Puzzle (New Yorker) and Silent Struggle: A New Theory of Pregnancy (New York Times)
Looking for recent articles and studies? Lectures from researchers? A chance to participate in research?

Caryn, who is not a doctor and who talks about science stuff *way* too much

Caryn, I was hoping you would chime in...Tuesday I had blurred vision, yesterday I threw-up again and today I have a headache, they still haven't called about my 24 hour urine, so I emailed them this morning asking for #'s, I am still waiting to hear back.

I had a really great nurse in L&D, she has been there for 30 years and has only seen 3 patients with HELLP, all of which she said were sent home by their OB's when she saw them, even though she said she had a feeling something was wrong and all 3 came back the next day and delivered early. She seemed very knowledgable about symptoms presenting weirdly and was very worried about me, she gave me the phone # there and said to call anytime, if I didn't feel right. So,if anything happens this weekend I am headed straight over.

Hopefully everything is okay
