So the day I admitted myself, I had the sparklers and on my left eye it was like someone was holding something over it and I could barley see. This lasted aprox on and off 7 days.

After delivery and discharge I had sparklers here and there that would last about 20 mins and go away.

I still notice some vision issues, like light sensitivity, or if I stare at something bright and look away I still have that image when I close my eyes...if that makes sense? No sparklers or anything in months, but can it cause permanent damage to your brain? Or is it just the retina detachment?

When I go to the eye doc in sept...do I tell him to check my retinas because I had preeclampsia...im afraid he will not know what I am talking about?

I hope someone replies here because I am interested in that too! I dont recall having any vision disturbances last pregnancy, but I may have but not bad to where I would remember it. But I know since having the preeclampsia my vision seemed to get worse, after going to eye doctors a few months ago my vision had changed big time and I was a little stupid and didn't think to mention that I had preeclampsia thinking maybe he wouldnt know what that is.

Hopefully someone chimes in here with good info! Because I know I definitely have vision issues but not sure if it worsened because of the pre E or what.

Laura, you need to go to an Opthamologist to really see any damage from PE. I called and made sure before I went to my appt. that the doc knew what Pre-eclampsia is. I had my eyes dilated a couple of times and had a retinal angiography done to check for retinal detachment or any other problems. They inject dye into your arm with a shot that shoots up through all arteries/veins and then they take pictures to check for bleeding of the capillaries, etc. As far as Optic nerve swelling they can see that when they are dilated.

An Opthamologist can see any damage done from high blood pressure or swelling. My vision was REALLY bad for awhile and had gotten better but it is more blurry than before. But I did not have any lasting damage from PE, thank goodness.

My doc gave me some vitamins for the eyes and drop for dryness. I also think we are sensitive to everything our bodies do after our scary experiences with PE/HELLP.

Good luck!!

Echoing in here...an opthamologist is the best idea. I had a check up soon after my BP got stable again. She explained that some floaters & things were normal, but she still did a great investigating anyway. I was seeing crazy things & worrying over them, but I think that I am just more aware of the things that no one else would really think twice about.

Son born 8/29/03 (mild PE delivered at 39 wks.)
Daughter born 8/17/06 (Had G/D but PE FREE!)
Son born 12/19/08 (developed PP PE 48hrs. after stayed in hospital 10 days on and off mag. & released on BP meds. & I still haven't quite healed, emotionally...)

From my own personal experience, I would tell him. I went to the opthamologist?-(a dr/md that specializes in eyes) a few months after I had my son for a prior problem. We started talking about my pre-term baby and the cause. She was glad that I told her about my PE because she said she needed to check my eyes especially well because PE could damage the eye. I was fine, but was glad to have the extra piece of mind. I never would have put the two together even though I had the floaters and sparkles with my PE. Good luck.

I would definitely see an opthamologist. I don't know if he/she will be able to do much testing now that you're pregnant, though. I know I couldn't get my eyes dilated at my last vision exam because I was pregnant. I don't know what, if anything, he/she can see without dilating your eyes. I would call and explain the situation and make an initial consult, though.

Opthamologists who are up on the research are awesome. Mine was all, "Oh, you had preeclampsia? I was at this conference last month that was *all about* the sFlt-1."

SFlt-1 is one of the primary chemicals produced by the placenta in preeclampsia. It's a protein called soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase, for those masochists like me out there. :)

What it does is bind to another protein which is responsible for helping to repair blood vessels, so when the placenta produces it, your blood vessels keep wearing out at their normal rate, but all the pothole repair of the streets just stops. The blood vessels get leaky, and you start swelling, and protein start spilling into your urine, and your kidneys say WHOA, leakage, raise the blood pressure to squish the holes closed! So then your pressures go up, and you've got a bunch of symptoms.

So this matters to eye doctors, because the reason there are no blood vessels in your cornea is that your cornea is full of sFlt-1, to keep the blood vessels from developing there and blocking your vision. Which is cool, because they really know what they're looking at when you show up and say, oh, I had preeclampsia!

Science is getting us closer to finding a cause, and even a cure. The articles you don't want to miss:

Just to add my 2cents... I was born 7 wks premature, had a dormant case of Retinopathy of Prematurity, add the unmonitored and untreated PE with my daughter, and I ended up with a retina detachment at 5.5 mos PP (well, symptoms started before then, but it took me 5 mos to realize I wasn't crazy and had a problem). The eye docs figure the PE triggered the ROP into active state. Then a month later the other eye started having retina problems too, which I'm still dealing with. The PIH with my son last year aggravated my eyes big-time but they healed up and settled down PP.

2005: Mom to Daughter, PE & IUGR (neither treated nor diagnosed at time), 40+2, newly diagnosed with SPD
2009: Mom to Son, PIH, 38+5, doing great!
