Just checking to see how quickly things can go from "watch and see" to "ouch!". My first son was delivered by c-section at 33 weeks from severe PE/HELLP. I vaguely recall it was about 5 weeks from noticing weight gain until emergency delivery. Can it develop more quickly? I've had elevated blood pressures (they go up and down from 135/85 to 140's over low 90's) for the past three weeks or so with some minor swelling in hands and feet. Swelling is a little more pronounced now and this checkup showed a trace amount of protein for the first time. I'm 38 weeks already and plan on a c-section when the doc gets back from vacation (2 weeks from now). Am fairly confident I'll make it but want to know if their is a "normal" timeline or if its different for everyone.

Mine developed from severe PE to full blown HELLP within hours. I had elevated BP at 23 weeks and hospitalized. My protein was 324. Everything pretty much stayed that way for a week and 2 days. Then that Thursday after lunch I started having the liver pain and my BP shot up to 232/110. The first symptoms happened at 2pm and I had to deliver by 9:40 pm. In between I heard my team talking that my labs came back highly abnormal just afternoon. So for me...hours.

Jasmin (28): PCOS, MTHFR mutation. Severe Early Onset PE with HELLP at 24+6; DH Frank (28)

Average time from diagnosis to delivery is 2 weeks. But that takes into account people like you who lasted 5 weeks and those like Jasmin who had to deliver within hours. It's different for everyone & every pregnancy even but it really can happen *that* quickly. Are you having frequent u/s monitoring &/or NST's & BP checks? Have you done blood work and/or a 24 hour lately?

Katie 4/14/05, 6 lbs 6 oz @ 38 weeks for PIH only!
Allison Nicole 12/27/07, 5 lbs 9 oz. @ 36 weeks for PE, still dealing with BP issues from PP PE

They took a baseline protein around 23 weeks and labs taken two weeks ago were fine with the exception of lower blood platelet count. The HELLP syndrome for me did come on quickly (within hours, thankfully while at the hospital because of the severe PE) - I'm not as concerned with the HELLP though of course I'll watch for the signs. Mostly I'm hoping the trace protein along with the edema and elevated BP is not the beginning of PE and/or will take its time in becoming a real problem. At this point I see the Nurse Practioner next week and I'll continue to monitor BP at home.

Docs determined I had "mild" pre-e on 6/5. I was forced to deliver 3 days later on 6/8.

Pe can be severe in a matter of minutes. HOWEVER I do believe that there are precursors that lead to PE or PE progressing, such a slightly higher BPs on the rise and swelling.

It is highly variable. Our director of research went from fine at her 2pm OB appointment to Class I HELLP by the start of SNL. I went from 130/80 and trace protein to 220/116 and +4 protein in under a week. Some people limp along for months.

Science is getting us closer to finding a cause, and even a cure. The articles you don't want to miss:

I snailed with PIH at 12 weeks to full blown pre-e and HELLP at week 20. When it did hit my upper body, my hands went from fine to so swollen in 5 minutes. I couldn't hold the dishes to wash them, that is when I went to L&D. This stuff can progress very rapid or snail along. That is why it is very important to know the signs and symptoms and never to trust these syndromes.

For me I was at my 36 week appointment, sent to the hospital for tests, induced overnight and had an emergency c-section the next day. My issues did not get better after delivery. I continued to get worse leading up to eclampsia and HELLP.
