I am starting my 24 hour urine tomorrow at 6 am...do I have to go downstairs and put it in the fridge? I typically pee every few hours... I would like to sleep in a bit tomorrow and if I keep having to go downstairs to put pee in the fridge...ugh...Or can I leave it out for a few hours?
Should i be drinking tons of water and avoiding certian foods while I do this? Any tips?
Also should I be doing a 24 hour urine when I am on vaginal inserts of progesterone (the stuff to help keep progesterone up?) |

| When I was in the hospital, they just kept the jug on ice in a bucket. Can you do that? |

Laura,
You know, when I did my 24 hr urine in the hospital, a nurse told me they only put it on ice because of the odor that it may bring. I was very surprised to learn about that! I was never told befoer about that, but makes sense. She said having it cold or with ice doesn't affect the results. But you can doublecheck on that, but that was what I was told! So next time I do one, I think I may just keep it with me. Its a pain having to keep going to the fridge and what not! :) Hope that helps! |

I was told that the progestrone inserts wouldn't change the 24 hour urine outcome and to continue with the meds and the collections. I was also told NOT to change anything about your diet. Eat and drink as you normally would. If you change your diet/liquid intake only when you do a 24 hour collection it isn't as accurate. Good luck!! |

| I once asked a nurse if it was necessary for the 'pee jug':) to be put in ice, because they kept letting the ice melt and not putting more in for hours. She said that they use to not have to put it in ice or the fridge but now it is recommend, I cant really remeber why she said it was recommended, maybe something to do with bacteria? It probably just depends on the lab/hospital where you are getting it done. |

| Well, that's interesting. Like I said, I have done it four times and was never told to do that. I did it twice through a lab & twice through my doctor's office...crazy! I was just handed the big orange jug with paper instructions...and was told how & when to collect... PS. I hated them...G.R.O.S.S...I don't do so well with things like that, or at least collecting them. |

| There are two kinds of jugs; one has a preservative in it and does not require refrigeration, and the other doesn't and needs to be on ice or in the fridge. If they told you to ice it, I would. Unless you know for a fact that it has the preservative (I've always had the kind that have to be refrigerated) in it, I would error on the side of caution and ice that jug! ;) |

| Wow, Heather, you know your stuff! I would have never known anything other than not refrigerating it, seriously. I now will be asking everytime from now on! |

| I only remember because the doctor's office gave me an instruction sheet. One section was how to handle the refrigerated kind; the other section was how to avoid getting the preservative on your skin if you had the other! LOL. |
