My name is Michelle Potter. I discovered that I was pregnant for the first
time in August 2001. My husband and I were thrilled. I was 29 years old,
healthy, and ready to become a mom. I read a bunch of books about
pregnancy, took my prenatal vitamins, ate a healthy diet, and received
regular check-ups throughout my pregnancy. Everything looked great until
Sunday, January 13, 2002.
Just a week before, I'd seen my midwife for a monthly check-up. I had
gained a bit of weight for that month, and my ankles were swollen, but my
midwife and I were not concerned. My blood pressure was normal and there
was no protein in my urine.
That Sunday, I woke up with a severe headache and was vomiting. I was almost 27 weeks pregnant. My doctor prescribed
Tylenol 3 and my husband went to the store to fill the prescription. While
he was gone, my vision steadily diminished until I could no longer
see. Upon my husband's return, I took a Tylenol -- which I promptly threw
up. Then I had a seizure. My husband called 911.
I was taken to the hospital, where I had another seizure in the emergency room. I had a
c-section and Sophia Talcott Potter came into this world at 4:15pm.
Sophia was 1 pound, 10 ounces at birth. She is currently at the Neonatal
Intensive Care Unit at the University of California, San Francisco Medical
Center. She will be one week old tomorrow.
